This is just a sampling of the wild, weird, and wonderful Canadian sites that are out there. For those of you in a hurry to see a list of the sites, click here. Or, try Daily Picks, a selection from our daily additions that stand out as noteworthy. And, as always, we welcome your comments and suggestions.
Welcome to this week's edition of the Weekly Picks, where we'll start off with this question for you older Canadians: do you remember this music? Yes, it's back and it's wild. It's the official Hinterland Who's Who homepage, for anyone who ever wondered what happen to that real cute woodchuck you first saw while watching Mr. Dressup. For those of you too young or non-Canadian to know these things, Hinterland Who's Who was a series of educational shorts on CBC Television that introduced us to some -- no, make that a lot -- of Canada's feathered and furried citizens. From the chipmunk to the Canada goose to the great horned owl, all your old friends are here, plus a couple of new ones.
Not that you have to go out into the bush to see a bit of wildlife; from what we hear, the Sundance Festival was pretty wild, too. And although this year's festival for independent films is now but a sweet memory for most, two Canadian films deserve a second round of applause: The Hanging Garden, a haunting look at a young man coming to terms with his Nova Scotian upbringing, and C.U.B.E., a sci-fi movie about six unwilling strangers thrust into a horrifying maze. It's got action! It's got suspense! It's got... well, okay, we haven't seen it yet, so we can't tell you if it's got really good-looking people getting munched up by slime-dripping aliens (but wouldn't it be really cool if it did?). But we can tell you its official Web site is pretty cool in its own right, and proof that you don't need a bazillion dollars to produce a top-notch sci-fi/fantasy flick.
Come to think of it, if C.U.B.E. director Vincenzo Natali did have a bazillion dollars, who do you think he would sign up for his next picture? Jim Carrey? Pamela Anderson? Neve Campbell? Dan Aykroyd? Not only are these some of the most recognizable names in Hollywood, they're also some of Canada's most famous homegrown sons and daughters. But of course, you already knew that because you checked out Movies at Home's Canadians Among Us. A rather curious title, since we've always been "among" the Americans, haven't we? Do they somehow have reason to fear our growing show-business might? Memo to Americans: You have nothing to fear from us. Honest. All we wish is to entertain you... and maybe kick your butt in curling, but let's not get into that right now.
On second thought, let's. Not that we here at Yahoo! Canada have been known for our precog... precogni... future-telling abilities, but we predict quite a few medals coming Canada's way at the 1998 Winter Olympic Games. In fact, word is we're going to shine in men's figure skating, no small thanks to Elvis Stojko. If you agree, then you may want to check out Elvis: Heart of a Champion while waiting for the competition to begin. Created by two very devoted fans, the page is a tribute to the guy, the skater, the legend -- with more photos and articles than the number of those triple-jumping-whatevers that Elvis can pull off in an evening. And we bet you didn't know our boy was quite the philosopher, did you? Well, now you do. So go root for him, already.
Okay, we can hear you couch potatoes saying, "Well, good for Elvis, but what about a site for us normal joes who get winded switching the channels?" Well, okay. Never let it be said that Yahoo! Canada doesn't cater to everyone. For you non-athlete types looking for ways to get in shape, we recommend Body Break, with those very happy and very fit hosts, Hal Johnson and Joanne McLeod. Yes, it's true -- all the fun of those TV fitness commercials is now on the Internet. Test your nutrition knowledge, try out some lo-cal recipes, or get some tips on how to get the most out of your fitness routine. And did we mention that you could win your very own Body Break video or CD? Too good to be true? Believe us, it is possible to have your yogurt shake and eat it, too.
Or maybe you just want to put off the exercise for another six weeks or so and blame your TV habit on the winter weather. If that's the case, thank Wiarton Willie for giving you the chance. Either way, take your pick(s).
