Those who are familiar with Natali's films know about his love for
graphic imagery. From the bizarre, disturbing effects in his short
film Mouth and the horror film intensity of Elevated, Natali's CUBE
keeps his tradition alive.
The brilliant physical and prosthetic effects of Caligari Studios
combined with the dazzling computer generated effects by C.O.R.E.
Digital Pictures, made Natali's ambitious low-budget film a reality.
"It was really important that we had both of these teams involved.
Caligari had worked on Elevated and I really wanted to do CUBE with
them. Having C.O.R.E. donate their effects was just incredible," says
Natali.
The results of Caligari's work is one of the most stunningng
sequences of effects seen in any film. These scenes took 24 consecutive
hours to shoot, but every minute was worthwhile. "Sometimes the process
of shooting a film can feel like work," reflects Natali. "But shooting
the effects scenes is always my fun. I love it."
As with any independent film, it always takes a little bit of luck to
pull things off. For CUBE, C.O.R.E. Digital Pictures was that stroke
of luck.
"We were really lucky to get C.O.R.E.’s involvement. That was the last
piece of the production puzzle. Their generous contribution really made
the difference," says Meh.
C.O.R.E. Digital Picture's effects took six weeks to produce under the
direction of special effects whiz Bob Munroe. Munroe explains his
involvement in the film; "Once we saw what Vincenzo wanted to do and
realized that the effects would enhance the film, we really wanted to
become involved. We really want to support the Canada’s bright young
filmmakers and the Canadian Film Centre.”
